Amateur Golfer Status
THE BALL

Any club or ball design that is not provided for under Rules 4 and 5 and Appendices II and II or that may substantially alter the nature of play must be regulated by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and the United States Golf Association. 

Weight
The weight of the ball shall not be greater than 1.620 ounces avoirdupois (45.93 gm).

Size
The diameter of the ball shall not be less than 1.680 inches (42.67mm). This specification will be satisfied if, under its own weight, a ball falls through a 1.680 inches diameter ring gauge in fewer than 25 out of 100 randomly selected positions, the test being carried out at a temperature of 23 +1°C.

Spherical Symmetry
The ball must not be designed, manufactured or intentionally modified to have properties which differ from those of a spherically symmetrical ball.

Initial Velocity
The initial velocity of the ball shall not exceed 76.2 m/sec (250 ft) when measured on apparatus approved by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. A maximum tolerance of 2% will be admitted. The ball´s temperature for this test must be 23 ±1°C.

Overall Distance Standard
The combined carry and roll of the ball, when tested on apparatus approved by Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews under conditions established and registered in the R&A for Overall Distance Standard, shall not exceed 256 meters (280 yds) plus a 6% tolerance. Important: This 6% will be gradually reduced to 4% as the measuring techniques improve.
