Salamanca Golf Course

Tradition, culture, history, sports, nature, gourmet cooking...and golf. Could you ask for anything more? They are all within reach in the beautiful city of Salamanca and the vast meadows that surround it. There's no way you can shank, if you choose Salamanca as your travel destination to get away, play a match and delve into the city's magic, culture and history, as well as its great food.
30/06/2000

Ten years ago, in 1990, the Salamanca Golf Course was opened at Mt. Zarapicos, just a few kilometers away from the capital of the province, along the Vitigudino Highway at the Parada de Arriba road exit. There was a clear calling to increase athletic and cultural interest in the city, which local amateurs were clamoring for. Sooner or later, it had to happen. Veteran golfer Manuel Piñero was in charge of designing the project. It was from his work that the spacious par-72, 6,044-meter (from amateur teeing ground) course came to life. The course was later remodeled by Rafael del Castillo, golf director and club professional. The result is a course without significantly uneven terrain, with a varied game that allows players to be ambitious and strike the ball with force in certain cases, while in others forcing them to be prudent and  play a more technically refined game, with fairways that are spotted with sand traps and at certain times shielded by out-of-bounds areas, bodies of water and other hazards. The greens are generally broad, fast-paced and well-protected by bunkers.

The course does not tend to hurt players too much as a result of their mistakes, and balls can generally be recovered, with a little bit of thoughtful planning. The course is capable of satisfying the average amateur player on days when they are well-concentrated and play a minimally solid game, and also has the proper features for professional competitions, such as the Spain-Solbank Championship, which took place in 1998. The winner was Cantabrian golfer José Rozadilla, in a breathtaking tie-breaker against Madrid golfer Alvaro Salto.

Conceived as an athletic and social center built for families, the club, besides offering all the typical services of a golf course within its installations, as well as a social club, a restaurant and golf equipment rental, is equipped with with squash courts, tennis courts, horseback riding, swimming, a gym, a jacuzzi and one of the most important things for a golfer, a day care center, so that they can enjoy their golf matches while our specialized staff takes care of their children.

Just as you would expect in a city that is open to the world, thanks to its amazing cultural scene and the beauty and history of its University, which was the first in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe, the Salamanca Golf Course is also open to golf travelers who are hoping to make the course part of an unforgettable trip. With the excuse of going to practice your favorite sport on a nice course of fine origins, you can enjoy our excellent cuisine, especially our unbeatable meats and sausages, while lifting your spirits by contemplating a first-rate site of culture and monuments. You simply must make a visit to the University, the Old Cathedral, the New Cathedral, the Convent of Las Dueñas, the Plaza Mayor with its porticoes, the House of the Shells, the House of Lis (currently the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Déco) and the Roman bridge over the Tormes River, just to name of few emblematic sites in the city of Salamanca, which has been named a world heritage city and is a candidate to become the European Cultural Capital City in 2002.

Its splendid monuments and cultural heritage, its exquisite foods, its excellent accommodations and the interest in golf make it the ideal location for a three or four-day golf vacation, rounding off a unique, unmatchable experience in Spain. Try it and you won't be disappointed.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Hole 1. Par 5. 484 meters: Spectacular teeing ground on a hill. The fairway makes a slight dogleg to the left with a sand trap where the ball drops after the drive, which penalizes tight strokes, so the drive should be aimed to the right side of the fairway. The putting green is on a hill surrounded by sand traps.

Hole 2. Par 4. 304 meters: You are recommended to drive with an iron so that you don't end up in the sand traps halfway down the fairway. The stroke onto the small green must go over the sand traps surrounding it and a rough located on the left.

Hole 3. Par 4. 399 meters: Difficult, long hole that you should always drive straight on.  Narrow fairway and a large putting green surrounded by sand traps.

Hole 4. Par 3. 144 meters: Ample green, but it is protected by an out-of-bounds area on the right, water in the back and sand traps all around.

Hole 5. Par 5. 439 meters: One of the easiest holes on the course, once you get past a lake right across from the teeing ground with the drive. Broad green on a hill.

Hole 6. Par 4. 357 meters: Straight hole. It is slant to the left in order to avoid the sand bunkers to the right of the fairway at the landing point and to have a better path into the small green protected by two large sand bunkers.

Hole 7. Par 4. 375 meters: Long hole with a left-leaning dogleg. Bunkers at the landing point and a green on a hill that is not too difficult.

Hole 8. Par 3. 168 meters: Very broad green surrounded by sand traps.

Hole 9. Par 4. 365 meters: Slight dogleg to the left. Green on hill with bunkers protecting the right-hand side.

Hole 10. Par 4. 339 meters: Short hole on a hill with an out-of-bounds area to the left of the fairway. The green is surrounded by several bunkers.

Hole 11. Par 5. 494 meters: Blind hold with trees on both sides of the fairway. Better to lean left. The green is one of the largest on the course, but totally surrounded by sand traps.

Hole 12. Par 4. 362 meters: Bunkers and hazards all along the right-hand side of the fairway. Small green with bunkers to the sides and behind.

Hole 13. Par 3. 189 meters: A long, difficult hole, with a frontal hazard and a putting green surrounded by bunkers.

Hole 14. Par 4. 359 meters: Straight hole with an out-of-bounds to the right and sand traps to both sides of the fairway at the landing point. Small green with lateral bunkers.

Hole 15. Par 4. 327 meters: Hole that is similar to the previous hole, but shorter and with a larger putting green.

Hole 16. Par 4. 317 meters: Short hole and a narrow fairway. Large green, very much surrounded by bunkers.

Hole 17. Par 3. 125 meters: The teeing ground is surrounded by bunkers. Trouble in every direction if you don't make it to the green.

Hole 18. Par 5. 497 meters: Hazard on the left and sand trap at the landing point of the drive. Long, sharp hole due to the uneven rise. High green with wash to the right.
